In case you haven't heard, there are some major stirrings going on in the international football world. If you have never paid any attention to USA soccer in your life, now would be the time to start. After barely scraping into the semi-finals Sunday, the US club pulled off an impressive upset against #1 ranked Spain. Granted this was a pretty much useless game in the Confederations Cup, it as huge implementations on the world stage.
The US squad, often passed off and discarded, played the Spaniards tough the entire game, thwarting many opportunities and chances. Tim Howard had an electric game in goal and the scoring strikes by Altidore (27th) and Dempsey (74th) pushed the US into finals on Sunday. With the win, the US has proven that they are capable of being competitive on the world stage. Finally, they are beginning to show the determination and heart that they have lacked for roughly the last 10 years.
The Americans will meet the ever prominent Brazilian squad at 2:30 PM on Sunday in the finals. Despite past frustration in games against Brazil, look for the US to hang tough on their heavily favored opponents, maybe even survive them for a win. If that does happen, I for one, will not be surprised. Don't say I didn't tell you so.
